“Saint Apostle Andrei - Bogdana” Monastery

Few people know that, within the Berinta vilage perimeter, part of the Copalnic Manastur township, in a natural and monkish setting, “Saint Apostle Andrei - Bogdana” Monastery soars it’s figure to the sky. It hides true and sad stories. The events can, anytime, put in a novel or a film. With his warm and slow voice, sometimes sad, sometimes high, we invited Mr. Mircea Rusu, helped by his wife , Ms. Doina. But let’s start the carrousel of thiese full of sadness destinies. He could hardly talk, the eyes were filling with tears, and only he knew the pain from his heart.

He could hardly talk, the eyes were filling with tears, and only he knew the pain from his heart.

Mircea Rusu: “I can tell you that the pain is still fresh in my heart. The story starts long time ago, in 1993-1994, when our family was full: me, my wife and Bogdan. In 1993 we went to Berinta, where we bought some old stables. There we started a cow and pig farm. In this context, we created over 150 new jobs. We went on without any help and we arranged pipes for the gas from 5 kilometers far, form the vilage of Carpinis. From 1994 to 1995, toghether with Bogdan, my only child, we visited a plateau that was higher that our farm, the same place where now is the monastery. Bogdan, was very impresed by the place, he said: “What a wounderfull house we could build here, father!” Later, we decided to build a monastery there, from the grounds.

We all woundered what should it resemnble to. So, in 1996, around 6 or 7 november, we went to see the most beautiful monument from Romania which respects the romanian architecture and it gets very close to what you could call true orthodoxy. We chose Bolnita church, near Cozia monastery. There we made plans, sketches, fotos.
Reporter: How was the encounter with the Blessed Patriarch Justinian, then the bishop of Maramures and Satu Mare?

Mircea Rusu: We came home and we were anouced by priest Varga that His Grace Justinian is waiting for us. He listened to us very atentif, and we told him all our intentions, in the smallest details. He was glad and he supported our ideea. We told him that we want the place to be blessed for the future monastary. His Grace was very happy because this was the first time he was told about a monastery that was going to be built on a private location. He took Bogdan by his hand, because they knew eachother, and there, on the 14th of november 1996, the Rusu family decided to build the monastery. The corner stone was placed by His Grace Justinian. The monasterys celebration day was going to be “Saint Ilie Tesviteanul”.

Reporter: Please, Mr. Mircea, I know that is hard to remember the sadest moments, the accident...

Mircea Rusu: Two weeks have passed. People don’t know the truth, and they talked a lot, but without a reason. The truth is this, that I am going to tell you. On 30th of november 1996, in the evening, we were at home, in Baia Mare, we were all living on Lacatus street, the three of us. Near the kitchen, at about 20 metres, was the bathroom, with a rather small tank. Me and my wife took a bath at 7 o’clock in the evening, after we talked a lot about the school we were going to choose for the boy. He was finishing the seventh grade, he knew 4 foreighn languages, he was working with the TV, he was translating. We are going back to the story from home. Bogdan entered the bathroom. I felt that I should go to the bathroom. I don’t know why, and when I entered, Bogdan was laing, on his back, with the head under water. I froze and couldn’t do anything, no matter how much I tried. Bogdan was dead! The police arrived, the prosecutor and the ambulance. There was nothing that could be done. We found out the second day what happened. The autopsy results came. What realy happend is that he returned from Egipt, where he took diving lessons at very high depth. He was telling me that he is swiming, but that he doesn’t have big enough volume in his lungs. He wanted to exercise. He got sick, he suffocated, and, finally, he died. His Grace Justinian was present at the funerals that took place where the monastery is now, he had a temporary grave, because he was going to be placed in the tomb. That’s how the light of our eyes died. We know he is here with us, all the time, and he teaches us to be strong and good. We miss him and it hurts.

Reporter: What can you tell us about the construction of the monastery?

Mircea Rusu: The work started in march 1997, and the monastery was being built by only one dab named Ioan Vint, 72 years old, who had golden hands. On 30th of november 1997, the monastery was built up to the base of the steeple. The tomb of our son was built in the foundation, in the basement of the monastery. In 1998 was built the steeple. The monastery is 27 metres high. That is also the time that the painting started. It was done by four paintors, the Salajan family from the vilage, and the Vrinceanu family, that came from Moldova. They are the ones that did the fresco, unique in the country”. A few words about the people that are living here. We enter this ghostly place, we admire the construction it’s self of the monastery-church. We are greeted by the abbess Eufrasia, an energic woman, that, at 72 years old, in her mother thong from Moldova, has a surprising selective memory, and she told us a lot of stories. She came to Berinta from Buzau and she has a remarcable and vast christian activity. Toghether with another 4 nunns they make up the colectivity that lives at the monastery. Everything is very well ordained, the nunns are hard-working and have a big faith in God. The abbess Eufrasia entered the monastery life very early, at 14 years. Soon after that she introduced her parents to this life, Teodora and Ilie Bularca. They lived toghether over two decades at the Rimeti monastery in Alba county. Bouth abbesss parents died toghether, in the same day, at the same time, and they were buried toghether, in the same grave, at the Rimeti monastery. She stood there another 35 years. Than she moves to a little monastery from Paltinis from Sibiu county, and she stood there 12 years with the nunns that are now in Berinta. Work, learning and prayer. This is what the nunns are doing all day long, for the monastery to be finished. But there is so much mistery and truth! So much pain and suffering in the souls! How many tears have dropped from the parents eyes! The works advence. First they bring electricity, gas and drinkable water. For the service, comes priest Alexandru Nechita. The monastery is now visited and admired by many christians and pilgrims from many parts of the country. Two young, mathematics proffesors, Ramona and Ioan Petreus form Viseul de Sus, just in a few days, made and donated to the nunns a special and very necessary flyer about the Saint Andei - Bogdana monastery. Congratulations for the two proffesors.
